Setting Up Class Accounts

Account Types

There are three types of Class Accounts:

How do I set up a Class Account?

For Student Accounts:

  • For CSE graduate classes, the student, TA or instrutor may fill out an account request form. Once this form has been submitted, CSEhelp will validate the student's enrollment, and create the account. These accounts are for students who are not declared as CSE graduate majors but who are enrolled in CSE graduate courses.
    OR
The class instructor can notify csehelp@cs that an account needs to be established for their students who are not declared as a CSE graduate major (extension students, undergraduates or non-CSE graduates enrolled in the class).
  • It is the responsibility of the instructor (or student or TA) to provide CSEhelp with a list of those students needing an account. It is suggested that the instructor use the account request form, or email csehelp@cs a copy of their class roster with an asterisk placed next to the name of the students needing an account. Note that only instructors can request accounts via email.
  • A separate list must be submitted for UCSD Extension students because these students are not listed in the class rosters.

For TA Accounts:

  • Accounts for non-CSE TAs (e.g., Math students) are established at the request of Student Affairs.
  • CSE graduate TAs already have a department account. However, CSEhelp will provide these TAs with access to the current quarter's rosters.

For Tutor/Reader Accounts:

The class instructor must submit a request to csehelp@cs to set up an account for undergraduate tutors and readers.

Important Notes:

  • Please let us know if any account requests are a "rush" request. Please allow 48 hours for CSEhelp to set up any rush request.
  • An account requested via email will ONLY be set up at the request of the class instructor or Student Affairs. The student or TA can not request an account via email. TAs and students are asked to use the account request form. Class instructors are also encouraged to use the account request form.
  • Accounts are only active for the current quarter.

Your Class Account Information

  • Once CSEhelp establishes the account, an application and information packet is put together for the new account holder.
  • The class instructor is given the account application and information packet to distribute to the students and tutors/readers needing accounts.
  • The application must be signed and returned to the instructor.
  • Once the application has been signed, the instructor may give the information packet to the new account holder.
  • Student Affairs is responsible for handling the account application and information packets for TAs.
  • The class account information packet contains the following
    • login name
    • password (and how to change password)
    • account expiration date
    • CSE systems which you may access
    • security policies
    • pertinent web pages

What does a Class Account provide?

Student Accounts

  • These accounts are for non-CSE graduate students currently enrolled in CSE graduate courses. This includes extension students, undergraduates or non-CSE graduates enrolled in the class.
  • The home directory is located on cseguest.ucsd.edu.
  • No email address is provided for class accounts.
  • Accounts provide login access to cseguest.ucsd.edu and CSE graduate instructional systems, like the ones in the APE lab.
  • If the instructor has made a request for extra class disk space, it will be located under
       /cse/class/QtYR/cseXXX

[QtYR is quarter year abbreviated (e.g. sp03) and XXX is your class number]

TA Accounts

  • These accounts are for non-CSE graduate students hired as TAs to support a current CSE undergraduate class. (Note: CSE undergraduate classes use computing resources supported by Academic Computing Services.)
  • The home directory is located on cseguest.ucsd.edu.
  • All cse class e-mail sent to the user (login_name@cs.ucsd.edu) is delivered to cseguest.ucsd.edu but forwarded to the users UCSD mailname if applicable.
  • Accounts provide login access to the cseguest machine and CSE graduate instructional systems, like the APE lab.
  • Roster information is no longer available directly through the CSE department. If you need roster information, please see the class instructor.
  • Upon the instructor's request, TAs may be added to a class group and given permission to edit the class web pages.

Tutor/Reader Accounts

  • These accounts are for undergraduate students who are hired as tutors/readers to support a current CSE undergraduate class.
  • These accounts DO NOT provide access to the CSE student rosters. The information in this data is confidential. If needed, the instructor may provide the tutor/reader a copy of their specific class roster.
  • Upon the instructor's request, Tutors/Readers may be added to a class group and given permission to edit the class web pages.
