How to get your Class Web Page up and running

The CSE class home page directories are updated by csehelp each quarter. The instructors for courses currently taught are given ownership permission for their web page. Links are activated for courses offered during the quarter. Default index.html pages are placed in the directory. Courses listed in gray are not offered during this quarter.

Where to begin?

  • Class Web pages are located at http://www.cse.ucsd.edu/gradedu/courses/homepages/gradclasshomepages.html
  • To edit your class web page locate your class directory under
    /cse/htdocs/classes/QtYR/cseXXX

    (for example, /cse/htdocs/classes/wi98/cse100)
  • Create your web page. Replace the default index.html file with your class index.html file.
  • If you want your TA to work on the class page, you must have a class group established by CSEhelp.
  • If you choose not to use the web space provided by CSEhelp, please remember to still email csehelp with the link to your class web page. This way the class index can be updated and link to your page.

Class Group Setup
At the instructor's request, CSEhelp will set up a unix class group so other people (e.g. TAs) may receive access to the class/web directories. Anyone in this group will be given permission to work on designated class web pages. Once again, to create and edit the files, the user must be on a CSE computer supported system.

How does one set up a class group?

  • The instructor must email csehelp with the course number and names of the members to be included in the group.
  • Once the group is established, csehelp will send out an email notice to all members of the group. This email will provide details about the unix class group.
  • The class group names are composed of the class number, quarter and year. For example, the group name for CSE 21 during winter 2002 would be: cse21_wi02.
  • To see the names of the members listed in the group, use the ldapmatch command:
       % ldapmatch GROUP_NAME group

  • To see which groups you are in, use the groups command:
       % groups USER_NAME

  • New group privileges do not take effect until the user has begun a new shell.
  • All class groups are terminated at the end of the quarter.

What happens to your class web page at the end of the quarter?

At the end of each quarter the master class directory is updated. Currently the web pages for previous quarters are being stored, by quarter, on the CSE Class Home Page. Ownserhip of the class web pages remain with the instructor. However, please note that all class group permissions are terminated at the end of each quarter.

Note for Instructors Teaching Undergraduate Classes

Academic Computing Services (ACS) also provides space for your class web site. You may find it more convenient to have all your computing resources and needs maintained by ACS.
