Faculty

The department absorbs the support charges for faculty. Faculty are responsible for purchasing their own workstations through startup funds or other funds available to them.

Lecturers

Lecturers with startup funds are covered in the same way as faculty. Unit 18 lecturers are covered in the same way as department staff. Temporary lecturers must provide their own workstations (i.e. laptop).

Ph.D. Students

Support charges for Ph.D. students, paid as GSRs, are to be paid for by research grants or other funds available to the faculty. Faculty are responsible for providing workstations for the GSRs who are affiliated with them.

If students on fellowships are working on research projects, funded by a grant, support charges must be paid for by the faculty member responsible for the grant. Faculty are responsible for providing workstations for students on fellowships that are working on their research projects.

Ph.D. students who have passed their research exam are subject to the same rules as students who are active GSRs.

Support charges for unaffiliated Ph.D. students, who have not passed their research exam and are not working on research projects, are absorbed by the department. The department provides workstations for unaffiliated Ph.D. students not working on research projects.

Masters Students

If a masters student is working on a research grant, the rules associated with Ph.D. students, above, apply.

Support charges for masters students, who are not working on research projects, are absorbed by the department. Unaffiliated masters students may use the department's graduate computing lab for computer access.

Students from other Departments

Students from other departments, that reside in the CSE building, are subject to support charges as described above. Fund managers will verify that support charges are not double billed if there are situations where research is being conducting in conjunction with another department that has a computing support recharge policy.

Research Scientist/Scholar Project Scientist/Scholar Postgraduate Researcher/ Research Staff

Support charges for all persons associated with research are to be paid for by the research grants or other funds available to the faculty. Faculty are responsible for providing workstations for all people associated with their research.

Visiting Scholars

Visiting Scholars are individuals who reside in the CSE building for a period of time to do collaborative research with a member of the CSE faculty. Visiting Scholars are responsible for covering their own support charges and providing their own computing equipment as required by university policy.

Department Staff

The department absorbs the support charges for department staff. The department provides workstations for the department staff.

Non-resident Guests

Support charges for non-resident guests are paid for by the faculty that sponsors them.

Non-resident guests are people that are collaborating with members of the department and need access to the department's computing infrastructure and do not occupy physical space at the university. Support for non-resident guests is billed at a lower rate than researchers who have desk space within the department.

Any guest that occupies desk space within the department shall fall in the research or visiting scholar categories (above).

Note that the university has license agreements regarding access to various intellectual property (library resources and software licenses) available to members of the university. Guest accounts shall not be provided to give access to university licensed materials. A collaborative relationship must exist for a guest account to be issued.
