- C: Drive for O/S only! Please do not install software, or 'save'
user files to the C: drive. Software installs should reside on the
D: drive, and 'user' files to E:\User area... (that you
wish to be backed up).... The E:\Users directory, and
any folders or files below it, are backed up overnight.
Please save other 'temporary', and non-essential files to other non-backed-up
directories such as E:\My Music as the tape backup system can be overtaxed
by everyone saving large non-essential multimedia (e.g. MP3), etc. files to
their 'Users' area.
Also, E:\Users is the default 'save' directory for MS Office applications
('My Documents' for W2K, redirected to E:\Users).
- Attachments: NEVER launch (double-click) an email attachment(s)
from within an email client window. The attachment(s) MUST be pre-scanned
with Norton AntiVirus. (Info ) As new virus
strains may arise which antivirus scanners are not able to detect it is best
to refrain from opening attachments unless they are work related.
- Personalizations: Backuping up copies of calendars, contacts (address
books), bookmarks, favorites, etc. is good insurance for not loosing data.
Certain applications only require a simple file copy while others require
an export/import mechanism. Contact CSEHelp for assistance with these issues.
- Network Security: It is advisable to deselect Netscape's Java and
JavaScript options when not needed (Edit/Preferences/Advanced). Note: some
websites require JavaScript in order to view the contents correctly (or at
all).
-
CPU powered on: Please do not power off the CPU box. User files
are backed up overnight each weekday evening. You may elect to power off
the color monitor for the weekend. However, it's best to leave the monitors
powered ON during the weekdays - to reduce the hardware failures caused
by frequent power cycling.
-
Printing: Print jobs may be removed from the 'queue' by opening
the print-object via Start/Settings/Printers/[printername]. This is handy
if a printer is jammed mechanically and you wish to send the job to an alternate
printer (and to not waste paper when the printer operation has been restored,
thereby draining the print-queue).
-
Log into CSE domain: The login Window has three components: username,
password, & domain. Always be sure the 'domain' box has 'CSE' selected.
An administrator may have previously logged into the 'local' system which
would change the text in this box. Select 'CSE' by left-clicking with the
mouse on the down arrow next to the domain field.
-
Netscape 4.x Zombies: A bug in Netscape 4.xcauses the browser to
become unresponsive. The problem appears to be fixed in Netscape 7.x/Mozilla1.x.
This is caused by a zombie process which prevents websites from loading.
You can test this by launching InternetExplorer5 & entering the same
URL. To clear the zombie simply quite ALL instances of Netscape (including
Messenger), launch the NT Task Manager (right-click on the task bar and
select from menu) - left-click on 'Processes' tab - left-click twice on
'Image Name' tab - then search for netscape.exe in list. If found simply
right-click on the process and select 'End Process'. You may then restart
your Netscape browser.
-
Avoid large 'Desktop' files: When logging into (and out of) your
computer the 'user profile' (including everything on your Desktop) is saved
via the network to a logon server. If you place large files onto your desktop,
these files then are saved to the server as well, making the login and log
out process take considerably longer. Hence the suggestion (mentioned above)
to save files on the E: drive instead of the desktop. It's also advisable
to 'move' your IE6 'Temporary Internet Files' to another location (e.g.
d:\).
- X-Windows: To use X-Windows client applications you must launch
both an SSH client AND the X Server software (Exceed). An X application is
then entered in the SSH window. e.g. == odin% xclock &. If a server error
is encountered check the 'tunnelling' box in the SSH settings menu option.
- Graphics: The primary graphics file types utilized by most department
staff/faculty are .ps (PostScript) and .pdf (Adobe Portable Document Format).
When selecting a Web Postscript document, your web browser is currently configured
to automatically launch the GhostView Postscript viewer (GS-View/GS-Tools)
- if the browser popup window 'Open' radio button is selected. A local PostScript
file (filename.ps) may be manually opened by double-clicking the filename.ps
file. This should launch GS-View. A Web PDF file will either display within
the browser via an Acrobat plugin or launch an external PDF viewer. A local
PDF document, when double-clicked, should launch Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat
Reader. It is possible to change the 'file-type associations' to launch alternate
viewing programs. Contact CSEHelp for assistance if necessary.
- Screensaver: The four-button screensaver (usually at the middle-left
of the display) will password-lock your workstation. Before leaving for the
day you may either log out of Windows, or use the screensaver by left-clicking
the 'S' button. If only enabling the screensaver be sure to close all opened
documents (spreadsheets, word processing documents .) so they are backed up
(to tape) overnight, and to prevent work lose if administrator must perform
maintenance after-hours (rebooting servers). If you are requested to logout,
select the large X of the four-button screensaver. Then click the 'Log
Off' button.
- PC to PC Connectivity: File transfers (drag-n-drop) and document
sharing between Windows NT PCs is possible by 'Mapping a Network Drive'
to \\biz18\common$ Those with an CSE Windows domain account may attach to
this common share-point.
This is especially useful for exchanging documents between the business office/staff/faculty
workstations. (vs. email attachments)
- Windows/Unix Connectivity: To transfer files between Windows and
Unix systems one must 'Map a Network Drive'(MND) to Samba served resources.
In the 'MND' window, enter one of the connection points desired (see below
for choices).
The other mechanism is S(ecure)FTP - An SFTP icon should exist on your desktop.
A Windows 'Share' (to facilitate file drag-n-drop transfer) connection to
your department Unix 'home' directory is possible through the 'HOMES' link.
A Windows 'Share' connection to designated department Unix servers is possible
through the 'FILES' link. A user must have the appropriate Unix permissions
to establish a connection.
The Samba connection points are:
- \\csefast.ucsd.edu\option ----- options: [your-unix-login-name - webhome
- htdocs} - for staff and facutly only
- \\csegrad.ucsd.edu\option ----- options: [your-unix-login-name - webhome
- htdocs} - for grads and facutly ** only
**faculty access to csegrad home area
- Email Folders
There are two areas in which email clients may be configured to store email
messages:
--- on the local PC,
--- or on the email server (csefast.ucsd.edu for staff and faculty).
It is highly recommended that all email folders be created - and messages
stored - on your applicable server.
For Eudora email clients, create folders by right-clicking on 'Dominant'.
For Netscape & Outlook clients, create folders by right-clicking on your
server name.
