Performance appraisal is the process of assessing, summarizing, and developing the work performance of an employee
-- performance evaluations are an important part of the career development process for employees. It is expected
that the supervisors in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering have on-going dialogue with their employees
concerning their work performance and career goals. This feedback is typically done through informal discussions when
delegating and evaluating work assignments.
Formal evaluations are done on an annual basis and are specific enough to inform and guide the employee in the
performance of his or her duties. Input for evaluations comes from an employee's supervisor, staff colleagues
and faculty. In addition, subordinates have input into the evaluations of their supervisor. If an employee receives a
"needs improvement" rating in any area, the evaluation should include the reasons for this rating along with
clear instructions on what is expected of the employee in order for him or her to meet expectations. The performance
rating on an annual evaluation is related to the merit increase for which the
employee may be eligible.
