The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) offers a variety of graduate education opportunities, including PhD and Master's degree programs, and the Concurrent Enrollment program through UCSD Extension. Our graduate students explore the fundamental aspects and application of computation, spanning theory, software, and hardware.
CSE has 50 faculty members and appoximately 330 graduate students (composed of PhD and MS students). Most full-time PhD students and some MS students receive financial assistance in the form of fellowships, research assistantships, or teaching assistantships. The total UCSD enrollment in the Fall of 2006 was 26,876; approximately 50 percent of these students were women.
CSE's graduate program over all is currently ranked in thirteenth place by the US News and World Report, and UCSD was ranked in the top twenty in all computer science specialties (9th in Systems, 14th in Theory 17th in Programming Languages, and 19th in Artificial Intelligence). This has been an exciting year for CSE, including the hiring of more world class faculty, the move into our new building, and numerous awards granted to our faculty and students.
Applications for admission to the PhD and MS degree programs are considered annually for Fall Quarter admission only. The 2008 deadline is December 15, 2007 for admission the following fall. Current CSE undergraduates who have a distinguished academic record can apply to the Five-year BS/MS degree program.
