Sure, there are lots of fancy programs out there for manipulating images,
videos and sounds, but have you ever wondered how do those programs work?
What does it take to create a program like Photoshop? In this thread
you will learn the computer science behind these media manipulation
programs. You will learn how digital media is stored on the computer and
how to write programs in Python to do things like reduce red eye in images
and automatically create fun and interesting collages with your own pictures
(without using the mouse!).

Yes, there are lots of fancy programs out there for manipulating images,
videos and sounds, and the insights you get from
the other threads will apply here in this thread as you
learn how to use these tools.
You will capture images, sounds, and
videos of your experience at UCSD, and working in teams using
power of digital
representation, produce multimedia creations that will be shown to everyone
on the last day of COSMOS. It is an experience you will remember for the
rest of your life!

| Beyond Media Computing |

Did you know that computer science is a
discipline with deep ideas
that span mathematics, engineering, and even philosophy?
In this thread, we go beyond media computing, and
explore a wide range of topics in computer science.
We discuss questions such as: What does computation mean, and
what are its limits? Can machines think, and are brains just highly
advanced computers?
What does digital really mean, and is the universe digital or analog?
What are the engineering principles behind the design of the Internet and
the Web?
You will be challenged with interesting and exciting problems,
both during class time and in the lab.
Get ready to think and unleash your mind!
