As part of the admission package to all entering PhD students and some MS students, CSE offers one or more years of financial support to students, with the intent to continue support throughout the students' degree if the student makes good progress and the resources are available.
Financial support is available to qualified graduate students in the form of fellowships, loans, and assistantships for research or teaching. Graduate Student Research positions are typically awarded by the professor who is the holder of the research grant. Teaching assistantships are awarded by the department. Intramural fellowships are awarded by the department or the university.

Fees for the 2009-2010 academic year are projected to be $10,933.50 for California residents. For non-California residents and international students, fees are projected to be $11,275.50 and out-of-state tuition is projected to be an additional $14,694.00 for the academic year. California residents are exempted from paying tuition. United States citizens may become state residents after living in California for one year and fulfilling other requirements. Students supported by teaching or research assistantships usually also receive compensation for tuition and/or fees.
University Housing Services operates more than 1,300 apartments for couples, families, and single graduate students. They consist of studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Most of the two- and three-bedroom apartments are reserved for students with children. Studio apartments are offered only to single graduate students, and one-bedroom units are reserved for married couples without children. Rents range from $573 to $1300 per month. The rent for some of the two- and three-bedroom apartments excludes utilities. Because University apartments cost much less than comparable private housing, there are long waiting lists for married couples without children and for single graduate students. There is a wide variety of housing available off-campus. The cost of off-campus varies dramatically, and it can be difficult to find suitable housing during certain times of the year, especially September. Students should make their housing arrangements well in advance of the start of the school year.
