Life as a student in the CSE department can be pretty exciting. We have many varied opportunities for students to do great things.

Computer science and computer engineering students will find a computing degree opens doors to many exciting careers. The need for individuals skilled in computer science continues to grow. Technology is embedded and integrated in businesses, institutions, education in both teaching and research, private industry, and government.

You will learn to make make decisions and judgments independently and also learn skills to communication information accurately.

Learn programming in Java -- by making art!

In CSE8A, the first course in our major for many students, students create works of art while learning key Java programming skills. Want to know more? Listen to Dr. Beth Simon and her first-year students describe it at the annual CSE8A Art Exhibition.

Gain Team Development Experience by Designing Video Games

In CSE125 Software System Design and Implementation, Dr. Geoff Voelker's famous video game design class, students experience the design and implementation of a large software project -- via a multi-player 3-D networked video game. Independent Research in the CSE Dept.

Many CSE faculty offer special study courses for CSE students. 

  • Grocery Shopping Assistant for the Blind  Dr. Serge Belongie, CSE Faculty, is working on developing  computer vision-based technology to assist the blind with grocery shopping.  Students interested in working on this project should apply via the Jacobs School Global Ties Program.
     
  • Green Trainer  Dr. Geoff Voelker, CSE Faculty, is working on making a power meter based on the MSP 400x series of project boards. A number of options for reusing the generated power, such as charging lecture microphone batteries are being investigated.  Students interested in working on this project should apply via the Jacobs School Global Ties Program.
     
  • Global Ties Program is an innovative service-learning academic program putting UC San Diego undergraduates and their technical and creative skills to work for San Diego non-profit organizations.  Multi-disciplinary teams of UCSD students design, build and deploy projects that solve technology-based problems for community partners. Beginning in their first year, students can get involved with TIES projects.
