Admission Policy (Effective Spring 2001)
The CSE Exceptional Admission Program is an opportunity for academically exceptional UCSD students to apply for admission to the Computer Science or Computer Engineering major. As described in the UCSD 2001-2002 General Catalog:

Space permitting and in its sole discretion, the Computer Science and Engineering Department may periodically grant admission to the Computer Science (CS) or Computer Engineering (CE) majors to a small number of academically exceptional UCSD undergraduate students who were not admitted to these majors as entering students. Exceptional admission will be considered for students having an overall UCSD GPA of 3.5 or better who have taken at least two CSE, math or science courses demonstrating special aptitude for the CS or CE curriculum. Applications for exceptional admission must include submission of a course plan demonstrating ability to satisfy graduation requirements and a personal statement addressing the applicant's motivation to join the CS or CE major, in addition to other criteria established by the Department.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will adapt the same program for its CE major.

Application Process
Applications will be accepted at the start of Fall and Spring Quarters each year. This application can also be found at CSE Student Affairs, EBU3b Room 1200D. The application deadline is always at the end of 3rd week of Fall or Spring Quarters, 5:00 p.m., and applications will not be accepted after this deadline. Students must submit an application to a CSE faculty advisor (not the CSE Student Affairs Office) for consideration in the program. The CSE faculty advisor quarterly advising hours are listed at the Undergraduate Advising home page.

Applicants will be notified of a decision during the 5th week of Fall Quarter in time to begin enrolling in appropriate classes for Winter Quarter and during the 5th week of Spring Quarter in time to begin enrolling in appropriate classes for Fall Quarter.

Questions about 4- or 5-year plans of study should be referred to the students' college advisors, and all other questions about the Exceptional Admission Program should be directed to a CSE faculty advisor.

Since admission is space permitting, meeting these requirements does not necessarily guarantee admission.
