Congratulations on your admission to UCSD and into the Computer Science and Engineering Department! As you no doubt already know, computer science and computer engineering have emerged as fundamental intellectual and engineering disciplines in recent years. Through bioinformatics, mobile computing, artificial intelligence, and in many other ways, the impact of Computer Science and Computer Engineering are profoundly impacting society.

The CSE Department at UCSD is at the forefront of new developments in computer science and computer engineering. Our faculty and students are influencing the world with a wide spectrum of leading research, such as making the Internet more secure, decoding the human genome, applying data mining in business and inventing the concept of hyper-threading used in the latest Pentium processors.

Just as important, our faculty members are leaders in classroom instruction. From Java programming to modern cryptography, our undergraduate students receive a broad education. Our undergraduate program has a rigorous curriculum but also encourages individual initiative in the form of research and independent projects. We also offer an integrated five-year Bachelor's and Master's Program for accomplished students. CSE students can visit other countries through the Education Abroad Program, gaining valuable experience around the world. Undergraduate research gives students an excellent opportunity to establish strong relationships with CSE faculty as well as expans up the education they receive in the classroom. In addition, tutoring in CSE courses and industrial internships prepare our students for the challenges of technical and intellectual leadership in both industry and academia.

On April 1st, US News and World Report released its 2006 reputation rankings of graduate programs in the United States. UCSD's computer science and engineering department was elevated to the 13th position overall -- the largest jump of any program in the top 30. In addition, UCSD was ranked among the top twenty in all computer science specialties (9th in Systems, 14th in Theory, 17th in Programming Languages and 19th in Artificial Intelligence). Finally, UCSD's interdisciplinary program in Genomics, Genetics and Bioinformatics was ranked 6th in the nation. Over the twelve years in which US News has ranked graduate computer science programs, UCSD's rise has been unprecedented and unmatched by any program in the country. This recognition has mirrored the tremendous growth of the department over this time, the enthusiasm of its students, staff and faculty and the widespread impact of our research.

  • During summer 2006 (mid-June), you will receive notification from your college with enrollment information. Please be sure to visit your colleges website and follow their instructions, before you contact the CSE Department.

The CSE Department will offer an orientation two days before classes begin on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 from 2:00 - 3:30pm in the Auditorium of the Computer Science and Engineering Building (EBU3B) room 1202.

Please remember to submit all official transcripts to the Office of Admissions prior to the deadline of July 15. Please check to make sure that grades for classes you have completed are submitted, it is your responsibility to ensure that UCSD receives these transcripts.Call 858/534-8007 to speak with a transcript evaluator if your course grades are not yet posted on TritonLink. Course Equivalencies and Enrolling into CSE Courses
You must make sure that all of your courses have been transferred by checking your "Academic History" via TritonLink. You may find that not all of the courses you transferred in are equivalent to UCSD classes. Another website that may assist you with determining equivalent courses is Assist.org.

If you transferred in a class that you feel is equivalent to a required course for your major, and the course did not get listed as equivalent to a UCSD course, you will need to submit a petition. In order to submit a petition for review, you need to complete a general petition form, and attach a copy of the course description for the course that you took at your college. This process can take up to several weeks, so please be sure to submit your petition as early as possible. The courses you completed at your college must be listed as equivalent to our UCSD courses, in your Academic History on TritonLink, to be counted for your degree requirements.

TritonLink also offers Transfer by college information. Courses listed here are preapproved, this means that you do not need to submit a petition/request to receive credit for the course you completed at your previous school.

Sometimes, transferable course numbers are listed incorrectly underAcademic History in TritonLink. The CSE Student Affairs Staff can fix CSE transferable courses so that you get credit, if you let us know that a course is listed incorrectly in your Academic History. An error like this will keep you fromenrolling into other CSE courses. Please go to the CSE Building (EBU3B) Room 1200D, to get your course listing corrected or contact .

CSE 91 - Perspectives in CSE
One unit seminar. Waived for all transfer students. You do not need to take this course.

Enrollment into CSE 8A, CSE 8AL, CSE 8B, and CSE 11
If you completed a programming course in Java and the course is not listed as equivalent to CSE 8A/8AL, CSE 8B or CSE 11, then you have to submit a petition for review and approval. Please do this as soon as you can. Also, you should enroll into CSE 8A/8AL or CSE 11 to secure a seat. Last day to enroll before the quarter starts is Monday, September 19, 2005.

    Enrollment into CSE 12
If you completed a programming course in Java and the course did show up as equivalent to CSE 8B or CSE 11, then you are approved to enroll into CSE 12 (Data Structures and OO Programming). Ifyour Java Programming course is equivalent to only CSE8A/8AL, then you must still complete either CSE 8B or CSE 11, before you can enroll into CSE 12.
