Tracking your course requirements

The four-year plan is designed for students with no advanced placement credit. It is imperative that each student draw up a suitable schedule based on her/his specific circumstances. To plan your schedule, consult the Schedule of Current Course Offerings.  It's important to know what courses to take and when to take them. Once you have reviewed your major requirements, take some time to put together your academic plan. Use the following worksheets to record your quarterly class schedules.

Past Requirements for B.S. Computer Engineering

You will find past four-year plans here to assist you with tracking your major courses.  If you have any questions, please ask.

Getting Started

  • All CSE undergraduate courses are open for enrollment
  • All courses must be taken for a letter grade (except CSE 8A and CSE 8AL)
  • If you have any problems with enrollment, please send email to ugradinfo@cs.ucsd.edu or call 858/534-3621.
  • AP Credit: Effective Fall 2004, the CSE Department accepts a score of four on the A Exam as credit for CSE 8A and CSE 8AL.  Students must complete CSE 11
  • AP Credit: Effective Fall 2004, the CSE Department accepts a score of five on the A Exam as credit for CSE 11
  • AP Credit: Effective Fall 2004, the CSE Department accepts a score of four or five on the AB Exam as credit for CSE 11
  • 8A/8AL and CSE 8B are not required if a student completes CSE 11
  • CSE 11 is a faster paced version of CSE 8A/8AL and CSE 8B
  • Students will self-select which programming course to start with
  • Students without any programming experience in a compiled language are advised to take CSE 8A/8AL and then CSE 8B, instead of CSE 11
  • CSE 15L must be completed before CSE 12

Upper Division Technical Electives

  • Of the six technical electives, four must be either ECE or CSE courses.
  • For the Required Technical Elective, students must complete one design course: ECE 111 or ECE 118.
  • The one remaining technical elective can be any CSE or ECE upper division or graduate course. (If a CSE graduate course is used you will need to submit a petition for signature approval). For any other course, please consult the CSE Undergraduate Electives page. If you want to deviate from this approved list, you must petition through a CSE undergraduate faculty advisor. Only 4 units of either a 197, 198 or 199 may be used towards a technical elective.
