Values are necessary presupposition of analysis, because members'
accounting, based on shared values, renders their concepts & methods visible
to analysts.
But how can working designers actually discover values?
Methods include:
- practical ethnography (participant observation, field notes, audio &
video recordings, etc.);
- work of Labov on the structure of narrative, including evaluative
material which reveals values.
- work of Sacks on interactions of speakers & audience during joke telling;
- KJ method (Kawakita) to classify discourse fragments.
The following case studies have been done:
- value-based requirements analysis for small corporate recruitment firm;
- many UCSD class UID projects.
- values in mathematical proofs (applied to Kumo theorem prover interface);
- values in database interfaces (applied to DB schema mapping tools);
- values in narrative & metaphor (applied to performances with Griot).
So value-driven design works.
