Unfortunately, much research tries to emulate style of math or physics.
Often cited obstacles to progress include lack of:

1. precise formulations of real problems;
2. realistic metrics for adequacy of solutions.

Extreme reductionism is harmful, raising expectations that cannot be met:
  fueling disappointment, and cycles of hope & fear.

But semi-formal methods integrating social process can work.

Extreme relativism, that all human values equally valid, is also harmful.

But denying absolutism & relativism solves no real problems.

Instead, designers should live in groundless semiotic world of social reality:

• Most important design problems are not reducible.
• All communication is symbolic, mediated & interpreted.
• Groundlessness can spark compassion, ethics & better design.
