1. The class notes are not a substitute for the assigned readings! They are often critical commentaries meant to supplement or correct the readings, and sometimes they just reflect what I felt like writing at the time, rather than what is most important. The lectures and the readings beyond the text are at least as important as the text.

2. Readings and homework for a given week will normally be posted on the class website on Thursday and/or Friday of the week before; posted material is subject to change until Saturday, but any changes after Friday will be minimal.

3. Some people may be unable read assigned gziped postscript papers, probably due to using MS Explorer without gunzip and ghostview; the class TA Matt Ratto has written a note on how to set up your PC. You will probably have no trouble with unix machines, and will certainly have no trouble with the CSE unix machines on campus.

   • The Ethics of Databases, an application of semiotics to web search engines.

   • Reread the material on semiotics in Sections 8 and 10 of the class notes; these sections contain much of the most important information on applying semiotic morphisms.

2. Due 8 March:
   • The "Afterward" of Shneiderman.
   • Read Section 9 of the class notes, and reread Section 8 (it has new material).
   • Pages 18-22 of An Introduction to Algebraic Semiotics, with Applications to User Interface Design, on blending; you can skim the difficult math and concentrate on the examples.

   • Reread pages 1-14 of An Introduction to Algebraic Semiotics, with Applications to User Interface Design (up to but not including Section 3.1) and Section 4 (pages 15 to 18).

   • Read some basic information on XML; this is available at many places, including www.xmlinfo.com, or the O'Reilly XML Pocket Reference by Robert Eckstein, or www.w3.org (they maintain the XML standards), or www.xml.com, or www.xml.org.

   • Read Section 7 of the class notes, and reread Section 6.
   • Read the next to last paragraph of Section 5 of the class notes on adjacency pairs; it is new.

   • Techniques for Requirements Elicitation by Joseph Goguen and Charlotte Linde. A short critical survey of methods that can be used for exploring what users need.
   • A brief webpage on speech act theory and mitigation.

   • Communication and Collaboration from a CSCW Perspective by Mark Ackerman. This paper is very condensed and will need to be read several times by many of you; you may need a dictionary, and the class notes will also help.

   • The "Introduction" and the next section, entitled "Signs," in Semiotics for Beginners by Daniel Chandler, University of Wales, Aberystwyth; there is a US mirror site. (It could be a good idea to read these sections in the opposite order.)
